How to Troubleshoot and Repair the Detergent Compartment in Your Dishwasher

by Carolyn Jordan

You may not think much about the detergent compartment in your dishwasher, at least when it is functioning properly. However, this small piece of equipment plays a large role in cleaning your dishes, and if it becomes clogged with soap and debris you will end up wasting both time and money. Checking and cleaning the detergent dispenser should be a regular part of maintaining your dishwasher.

Fortunately, cleaning your dishwasher detergent compartment is not difficult. In fact, it should take only a few minutes, and it could save you a lot of money and keep your-dishes sparkling clean.

Cleaning the Dishwasher Detergent Compartment

If your dishes are not getting as clean as they once were, the problem could be as simple as a clogged or malfunctioning detergent compartment. If the detergent compartment is clogged, you could also notice an increase in the amount of dishwashing detergent you use.

To check and clean the detergent compartment, first open your dishwasher and locate the piece. The exact location varies from model to model, so check your user guide or owner manual for guidance if need be.

Use a soft cloth or rag soaked in warm water to clean any excess soap film and debris from the inside of the detergent compartment and the area around the compartment as well. Be sure that the detergent compartment is completely free of any soap before putting the lid back in place. Fill the compartment with new dishwashing detergent, then run a load of dishes to test the cleaning power of the unit.

Fixing the Rubber Gasket

If the dishwasher detergent compartment continues to malfunction even after a thorough cleaning, the gasket around it may need to be replaced. This gasket is designed to help the dishwasher function properly by keeping water out of the detergent compartment. Overtime, that gasket can degrade, allowing water to seep in and reducing the efficiency of the system.

Open the dishwasher and remove the cover from the detergent compartment. Check the seal around the compartment for looseness or play. The gasket should provide a solid seal around the detergent compartment. If it does not, it will need to be replaced.

Check the existing gasket for cracks or other signs of damage. If the gasket is damaged in any way it will need to be replaced. If the gasket is simply dirty, you can remove it, clean it and put it back in place.

It is a good idea to check the condition of the detergent compartment and the surrounding gasket each time you add dishwashing solution to your dishwasher. This regular maintenance helps your dishwasher to run more efficiently, which can in turn save you money and reduce your energy costs. Contact a dishwasher installation expert for more advice.
